Originally planned as the first installment of a two-part finale for the current iteration of the Fast Saga, Fast X: Part 2 was slated for a 2025 release. However, during the promotional phase for Fast X, there were hints from Diesel that Universal had requested a three-part finale instead based on early screenings.

Nevertheless, the future of Fast 12 remains uncertain due to the box office performance of Fast X. While surpassing the half-billion mark is an impressive achievement for any movie, the latest Fast & Furious installment carries a hefty price tag of $340 million before accounting for marketing expenses. If the next film experiences a further decline in the United States or faces a significant slump internationally, it may hinder the possibility of Fast 12 ever hitting the road.

Whether Fast 12 can outpace Fast X, as finales often tend to do, remains to be seen. However, the current film continues to deliver disappointing results. In fact, in its third week, it ranked lower on the domestic top 5 chart compared to Guardians of the Galaxy 3, which was in its fifth week. This unfavorable trend does not bode well for Fast X's future performance domestically. With upcoming blockbusters like Elemental and Indiana Jones 5 poised to provide even stronger competition, Fast X could initiate a disheartening domino effect that might sideline Fast 12 entirely.
